Terminology
Below are some terms that are related to the paranormal.

Note: Definitions are from Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary: 11th Edition, other dictionaries,cited web site(s), or Sights Unseen Paranormal.
Afterlife: The state of being that occurs after death of the physical body.

Angels: A spiritual being superior to humans in power and intelligence; one in the lowest rank of the celestial hierarchy. An attendant spirit or guardian.

Anthropormorphizing: The process of assigning human attributes to something non-human. People do this to animals, and it is considered in the design of robots. In ghost hunting, this process can account for the tendency to see faces in ambigous visual stimuli such as pictures of mist or reflections. 

Apparition:
A ghostly figure. For paranormal investigators; a visual manifestation of a spirit in a somewhat human form. See photos of possible apparitions here.

Audio Recorder: A device for recording sound waves in either a digital or analog (tape) format. Commonly used by ghost hunters for case documentation and to record any anomalous sounds, including electronic voice phenomena.

Camera: A device which records an image of an object on film or digitally. Used by ghost hunters to document locations and possible paranormal phenomena including apparitions, light anomalies, and shadows. Sights Unseen Paranormal uses a combination of film and digital cameras, and video cameras (including infrared).

Clairaudience: The power or faculty of hearing something not present to the ear but regarded as having objective reality.

Clairvoyance: The power or faculty of discerning objects not present to the 5 senses.

Clearing/Cleansing: The process by which negative energy is eliminated or reduced from a person or location.

Cognition: Cognitive mental processes, e.g. perception. Also a product of these processes.

Deja Vu: The illusion of remembering scenes and events when experienced for the first time.

Demon: An evil spirit or entity. Also Daemon.

Dowsing Rods: Also diving rods. The practice of using forked or L-shaped rods made of a variety of substances to discover the presence or water, minerals, or other objects or energies through non-traditional, i.e. non-scientific means.

Ectoplasm: In paranormal terms, a mist, fog, or smoke-like manifestation of paranormal energy which shows up in video or photos, but which is generally not visible to the naked eye.

Electromagnetic  Fields: Abbreviated as EMF. Energy in the form of electromagnetic waves produced by a variety of objects. Ghost hunters believe that the anomalous presence of an electromagnetic field may be a paranormal phenomena.

Electromagnetic Field Detector: A device used to detect electromagnetic fields.

Electronic Voice Phenomena: Abbreviated as EVP. Disembodied voices captured on an audio recording source. Ghost hunters believe that these may be the voices of spirits or deceased persons.

Entity: A being with an independent, separate, or self-contained existence. A ghost or spirit.

Ghost: The spirit or apparition of a deceased person.

Ghost Hunter: An individual(s) who seeks out ghosts in a variety of locations, usually in an attempt to document their possible existence.

Ghost Photography: A field of interest that involves attempts to capture ghosts on film.

Graveyard: A place where the deceased are interned or buried. Sometimes "haunted" graveyards are investigated by ghost hunters.

Haunting: The occupation of a residence or location by a ghost or spirit.

Infrared: A portion of the spectrum of light that is not visible to the naked eye. "Below" red on the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, filming in this light allows one to "see" in total darkness, and may be more effective at capturing paranormal anomalies.

Intelligent Haunting: A haunting that may interact with living persons or objects.

Materialization:
The process of a spirit, ghost, or entity appearing or manifesting itself in a form that is viewable to the human eye or perhaps detectable by other senses.

Medium: An individual held to be a channel of communication between the earthly world and a world of spirits.

Orb: A ball of light that shows up on film or digitally. Some ghost hunters believe that they may be paranormal in origin, perhaps the beginnings of a manifestation of a ghost or spirit. The vast majority of orbs can be explained as reflections, dust, water droplets, or bugs.

Paranormal: Not scientifically explainable.

Paranormal Investigation: The investigation of a wide variety of phenomena, including ghosts, UFOs, and cryptozoology that is not currently explainable by science.

Parapsychology: A field of study concerned with the investigation of evidence for paranormal psychological phenomena (as telepathy, clairvoyance, and telekinesis)

Perception: The ability of the five senses to construct meaning our of the environment and events in the brain. The process by which we perceive.

Poltergeist: A German word which loosely translates as knocking ghost. A noisy and mischievous ghost held to be responsible for unexplained noises and movement of objects. Many believe this spontaneous human telekinesis to be responsible for this phenomena.

Portal: A doorway. Some paranormal investigators and psychics believe this is a means or construct through which spirits and ghosts can access this world. Also known as a vortex, some believe this phenomena can be photographed.

Psychic: An individual sensitive to non-physical forces, and possessing parapsychological abilities.

Psychology: The study of the human mind.

Residual Haunting: A haunting that "plays back" past events like a recording under certain, usually unknown, conditions, but does not interact with reality.

Seance: A spiritualist meeting to receive communications from spirits or ghosts.

Shadow People: A specific paranormal phenomena where the manifestation of an apparent ghost or spirit takes on the appearance of a dark shadowy figure, usually in the form of a silhouette. This phenomena does occasionally appear in photographs and video of haunted locations.

Sheol: Common grave of mankind. "...all slept together without awareness of one another..."

Soul:
The immaterial essence, animating principle, or actuating cause of an individual life.

Spirit: A supernatural, immaterial intelligent or sentient entity, i.e. an angel.

Spirit Guides: An entity which acts as an adviser or protector for a person.

Supernatural: Relating to an order of existence beyond the visible observable universe.

Telekinesis: The ability to move objects with the mind, i.e. without physically touching the object.

Telepathy: Communication from one mind to another through extrasensory means. Some believe this is the method by which ghosts appear to, and communicate with, living people.

Thermal Imaging Camera: A type of camera that allows one to film the temperature. Used by ghost hunters to film hot or cold-spots, and other types of paranormal phenomena. The price runs into the thousands of dollars, so they are only used by your higher end ghost hunters.

Unexplained Electrostatic Discharge
(UED)
Sometimes called "sparkles, this possibly paranormal phenomena is described as "tinfoil confetti" or "bits of igniting phosphorus" that appears in the air for less then a second, usually followed by or in conjunction with some other sort of possible paranormal activity, e.g. EVPs, EMF, the sighting of an apparition. The term was coined by Werner, an free-lance paranormal investigator who also operates with Sights Unseen Paranormal.

Wicca:
A nature-based religion.

Witchcraft: A practitioner of Wicca.

Wraith: An apparition, living or dead. Considered a portent of death.
